Everything Knows Itself: The world is round. -Gertrude Stein The theme of this years exhibition is Re:Use, it concerns the re-interpretation of what already exists, reflecting on the sameness and difference of things revealed by repetition, iteration, rhythm and phase. Sameness requires difference; the very regularity of a beat, of drumming, can be enhanced and overwritten. The second repetition is invariantly different then the first by being second. Difference resolves into more complex kinds of sameness. Many of the works in this years exhibition are as concerned with form as much as content. The pieces are spare, astringent, displaying a simplicity of means coupled with a transparency of technique. These works are virtually devoid of metaphor and stripped down to their most fundamental features. Other works are self-contained and self-reflexive, shedding light on the underlying systematized causes, both physical and mental, of their construction, exhibiting a regularity of behavior in the elements that they use. Opening: September 6th, 2007 @ 6pm to 11pm Exhibition: September 6th to 15th, 2007 Artist Panel: September 12th, 2007 @ 7pm

    • ArtCamp07: Re:use - 08/09/2007 to 08/09/2007
      • Venue: ECIAD IDS

ArtCamp07: Re:use is an ‘un-conference’, an event that uses principles of self-organization to bring together a group of people to talk, present, show work, stage conversations, learn new things, share ideas. It is an idea borrowed originally from the technology community, where it was observed that conversations happening outside formal sessions at traditional conferences were often more enjoyable, productive, and illuminating than the sessions themselves. To that end, an un-conference attempts to provide a flexible framework where people can enjoy those sorts of conversations, presentations and interactions. To ArtCamp07, people are encouraged to bring a presentation, talk, demo, workshop etc (or any hybrid of these things) to this context. It can also be about staging a conversation or dialogue on some subject or issue. It is an open format and is meant to expand the boundaries of what can happen in a conference setting. Particularly appropriate to this kind of event are hybrid sessions that explore boundaries between applied and theoretical practice. ArtCamp07 Re:use follows up on ArtCamp06, the World’s First Un-Conference on Art, which was attended by over a hundred artists, designers, programmers, critics, theorists, curators and practitioners from all fields who presented over 30 workshops, talks and hybrid events throughout a single day. We invite all manner of on-the-spot engagements including but not limited to: DIY projects that transform discarded materials in something beautiful, cool or useful; showing people how to cut and paste code to make quick and dirty websites or applications; strategies for revisioning experiences or environments; workshops for recycling photographs, cassettes, CDs or other technological or manufacturing detritus; conceptual detournement; discussion or demonstration of interventionist practices relating to performance, psychogeography or street art; collaborative drawing events; experimentation with found materials; realtime mixing of cameraphone pictures, text messages, video, photostreams or something else; swaps, exchanges or tricked-out marketplace mods for circulating, disseminating or evolving objects, subjects or frameworks; presentation of cultural objects or artifacts that relate to reuse or recycling; discussion tracing the circulation and “reuse” of strategies or ideas; or grand schemes for social or environmental engagements. ArtCamp is free and open to the public. Sign up on the wiki: http://2007.newformsfestival.com/artcamp

Scratch Video Aiming to present a comprehensive look at the world of scratch-video, one of the most prominent sub-genres of live video production and interfacing, this night focuses on video mixing/scratching within the context of hip-hop and electronic music. Assembling national and international artists, software developers, and other scene makers, NFF07 affords a mash-up of sub-genres, styles, and methods, showing where this form of art has been, where it is now, and where it is going. The real-time manipulation and mixing together of moving images, often in relation to music, is fundamental to this evening. Open Studios, #200-252 East 1st Avenue / Doors Open at 10 pm. • Cross-Pollination - 14/09/2007 to 14/09/2007
      • Venue: Open Studios

Cross Pollination Showcasing the differences, similarities and crossovers between different types of live music performance on acoustic, electric and electronic instruments, Cross-Pollination questions essentialist notions of style, technique, instrumentation and musical genre. Expect to see performances that blur the lines between different forms of music making, electronic and otherwise, as well as styles of playing that obscure the difference between production and performance. Cross-Pollination features 30-minute sets by live performers Integrated Circus, Wendy Atkinson, and Primes which are sampled live and then restructured and remixed by laptop/live p.a. artists (Team Rad) immediately thereafter, effectively being a live remix. This form encourages both artists and audience to stretch their understanding and appreciation to the limit, as it lays bare both the capabilities, but also inadequacies, of each of the forms, while pushing all artists involved to increase their skills and to broaden the scope of their art. Open Studios, #200-252 East 1st Avenue / Doors Open at 10 pm. Tickets Available at Zulu, Scratch, Beat Street and HighLife , $15 in advance, $20 at the door, please make reservations at reservations@newformsfestival.com
