Scott Kildall is an artist who works with technology-infused media and themes of memory and anticipation. His work is cross-disciplinary and includes video, prints, performance, installation, sculpture and audio pieces. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Philosophy from Brown University. In 2006, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago through the Art & Technology Studies Department. He has exhibited in galleries in Chicago, Miami, Houston, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Helsinki, Ireland, Spain and Romania. He did a conceptual art residency called “The Future of Idea Art” at The Banff Centre for the Arts in the fall of 2006. He followed this with a six-month fellowship at the Kala Art Institute focusing on remembrance in simulated worlds. He also works with Second Front — the first performance art group in Second Life. He currently resides in San Francisco.

Scott Kildall, USA, 9:30
These video montages consist of the “in-between” shots from iconic Hollywood films: a flock of birds flying in the twilight, a hand picking up a glass of whiskey, rain falling against garbage cans in an alley, trees whizzing by as seen from a moving car and so on. These interstitial moments are without faces or trademark shots so that recognition of a particular film is nearly impossible. I have carefully excised this imagery from about sixty films and tightly stitched them together to form readable narratives. I have further de-contextualized the shots by converting them to silvery black-and-white tones. Cinematic memory flows from shot to shot, spanning across space and time. I am hoping to displace the viewer into a familiar yet unfamiliar psychological arena.

For this project I will work with the films ‘Very Nice, Very Nice’ (1961) and ‘21-87′ (1963) by Arthur Lipsett, sampling small image and sound segments, and through repetition and layering with other elements, build something both minimal and massive. I will use analog processors that simultaneously manipulate image and sound, as well as hand built oscillators and feedback generators. I aim to create an experience that is overwhelming, visceral, and sublime, paying homage to a brilliant Canadian experimental film maker, whose work is rich in image/sound dynamics, and ablaze with the contradictory terrifying fantastic.
