Film to Video Transfer

No Image Yet

Using the collaborative works of Evelyn Lambart and Norman McLaren Film to Video Transfer will track the development of visual music in these influential artists works.

McLaren and Lambart together perfected a technique, originally pioneered in Rudolf Pfenninger’s Tonal Handwriting, of creating synthesized sound through the exposure of shapes and patterns onto the soundtrack portion of 35mm film. This process was initially explored in the early work of McLaren as he wrote directly directly onto the soundtrack with India Ink. Later, this audio synthesis was perfected in collaboration with Lambart through the use of a massive set of cards representing a full range of pitch and volume which could be photographed directly onto the soundtrack of the film. This graphical experimentation is presented in its ultimate form in the film Synchronomie where McLaren reprints the photographed soundtrack back onto the visible part of the film and completes the circle of visual music with perfect synchronization.

Film to Video Tranfer will use a variety of live a-v techniques to explore these established experimental concepts (drawing directly onto celluloid for example) with new technologies. Live editing, manipulation of samples and sequenced materials, as well as software and hardware signal processors, will be used to explore these classic works of film from a contemporary audio-video perspective.
