Anat Pollack, United States, 2003
Anat Pollack uses interaction as a means of engagement, offering space for active participation and a move away from passive modes of observation. In the interactive installation Shiko Ltd. 2007 v.2 she is interested in the way that memory functions, and the difference between human and machine information processing. In this work, sound is recorded, stored and digitally processed as a means of contrasting machine information processing with our own.
The data at first glance is obviously derived from audience interaction with the space. Computer algorithms act as metaphors to human perception by deconstructing and reconstructing sensory input. Over time, this information becomes disjointed as it is processed, breaking apart, rejoining, repeating, and reverberating in unpredictable ways.
Just as each new experience offers a new lens through which to perceive information, the system in Shiko Ltd. 2007 v.2 offers the opportunity to form new relationships between familiar images and sounds.
