The Western Front is one of Canada’s first artist-run centres. Over 30 years it has developed an international reputation as a centre for experimental art practice and performance. Five programs focus on the production and presentation of exhibitions, performance art, new music, media art and an arts magazine.

The Western Front Exhibitions Programme presents contemporary art by local, national, and international artists. Intentionally open, this mandate promotes experimentation with conceptual models and contexts for visual art and has allowed the program to expand beyond gallery exhibitions to include poster and book publications, cross-disciplinary works, and site specific projects.

The Western Front New Music Programme promotes diverse practices, with a commitment to excellence, exploration and risk-taking in the presentation of work by contemporary composers and performers. The programme encourages emerging talent and contributes to the careers of established artists by providing a supportive environment and a critical context for the research, creation, production and presentation of creative music projects.
